OET Reading Part A is the fastest and most time-pressured section of the OET Reading sub-test. You have 15 minutes only to answer 20 questions, which means you must scan and locate information extremely quickly.
This part is designed to test your ability to find specific details across four short healthcare texts. The key skills you need include:
• Fast scanning to locate keywords immediately
• Skimming for meaning to understand the structure of each text
• Accurate matching of information across multiple short texts
• Efficient time management, avoiding spending too long on any single question
• Keyword transformation, recognising synonyms and paraphrasing
Because of the strict timing, you must have a strong damage-control strategy. The safe target score for Part A is 17 out of 20, which gives you enough buffer to maintain an overall Reading score in the passing range.
OET Reading Part B tests your ability to understand short workplace texts commonly found in clinical settings. You will answer 6 questions, each based on a short paragraph taken from guidelines, policies, workplace memos, emails, or clinical protocols.
This section assesses your ability to identify:
• Main ideas and the writer’s purpose
• Attitude and intention behind workplace instructions
• Subtle meaning, including implications and warnings
• Correct interpretation of policies and procedures
• The most accurate answer, even when options look very similar
Although Part B is not as fast-paced as Part A, it requires careful reading and strong critical thinking. You must learn to eliminate distractors, understand the tone, and interpret the text exactly as intended.
You have around 10 minutes for this section when using ideal time management, which allows you to read each text closely without rushing.
A safe damage-control target for Part B is 4 out of 6 or higher, ensuring enough marks to support a strong overall Reading score
OET Reading Part C tests your ability to understand longer, more complex healthcare texts and to interpret opinions, implications, attitudes, and subtle meanings within the passage.
This part contains 16 questions (8 questions for each long text).
Part C requires you to extract meaning from two levels:
• C1: The literal meaning or the direct idea the sentence expresses
• C2: The deeper layer of meaning — the writer’s attitude, intention, implication, or hidden message
Most Part C questions are attitude/opinion/implication questions, so you need to understand what the writer is suggesting, not just stating.
Because Part C shares the same total time as Part B (approximately 45 minutes combined), you must manage time wisely. Ideally, allocate:
• 15 minutes for Part B
• 15 minutes for Part C1
• 15 minutes for Part C2
A safe damage-control target for Part C is 12 out of 16, which helps maintain a strong overall Reading score even if some questions are difficult.
